Portuguese-speaking Community in Massachusetts

Portuguese speakers come from a variety of cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds.

Most MAPS clients in the greater Boston and Lowell areas come from Brazil, Cape Verde or Portugal, but the area also has attracted newcomers from Angola, Guinea Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, São Tome/Principe and East Timor.

Heaviest concentrations of Brazilians are in the Allston-Brighton and East Boston sections of Boston, Somerville, Cambridge, Framingham/Metro West and Lowell.

Largest numbers of Cape Verdeans are in the Roxbury/Dorchester area of Boston, and in southeastern Massachusetts including Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard.

Largest numbers of Portuguese are in Fall River, Taunton, New Bedford, Cambridge, Somerville, central Massachusetts and the Lowell/Peabody area.
