Conference 2008

MULHER - The evolving world of Portuguese-speaking women

Call for Presenters

In this conference we propose to celebrate the accomplishments of Portuguese-speaking women who have taken steps in moving forward with their lives and in raising the standards of their communities.  The success of female immigrants from Brazil, Cape- Verde, Portugal and others is embodied in their confidence, self- fulfillment as much as in the dimension of their actions.

Conference proposal themes will include, but are not limited to, the following topics and categories:

  • Women breaking into new fields: science, technology, research, business, politics, sports, etc.
  • Overcoming discrimination, sexism, sexual harassment.
  •  Working towards women empowerment and gender equality.
  • Women living ordinary lives under extraordinary circumstances: social status, spirituality.
  • Accounts of women's struggles, to women's success stories: overcoming adversity despite barriers.
  • Women caring for themselves as they care for others: family, household and community issues.
  • Social roles of women: anthropology, sociology, psychology, interdisciplinary studies.
  • Women's health: mental health, alternative health care, young women's health, mother's health.
  • Women's forms of expression: art, literature, music, multimedia.
  • Women and immigration: impact of transition, deportation, living as immigrants.
  • Women and education: formal and non-formal education
  • Women and family: inter-generational debates

Types of submission:
Submissions should consist of an abstract of 500 words or less, explaining your topic and idea for a panel presentation of 10 minutes, or a 10 minute artistic presentation related the above topics.  All submissions will be reviewed by the committee.  Successful candidates will present their work at the conference.
