Call For Presenters
The MAPS conference planners invite your proposal for a 15 minute individual panel presentation, followed of discussion with other panelists, on our workshop sessions. Workshops will include: 1 Moderator, 3 Presenters. This conference will be held in English.
Possible conference workshops include the following themes (but can be subject to change):
Workshops

The social and environmental health of our immigrant communities
- Environmental and work related toxic exposure and disease
- Impact of these issues in the Portuguese-speaking families
- Immigrant workers’ rights

Sex, unsafe behaviors, and violence in our communities
- Sex education; prevention and care of STD’s, HIV, substance and alcohol abuse
- Domestic violence: prevention; psychological impact on the family; law enforcement, legal issues and deportation

Delivering health and mental health care to the Portuguese-speaking communities: Disease, culture specific beliefs, life styles, and access to services
- Chronic diseases; nutrition, sedentary life styles and overweight
- Treatment of stress related illnesses including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder
- Access to all types of quality health care in a time of shrinking budgets and high medical costs

The role of the Portuguese-speaking media in community education and risk communication
- Review the ways the Portuguese-speaking media inform and disseminate knowledge regarding the topics of this conference.
- Establish ways the media could work with the community to communicate knowledge and prevention.
Presentation abstracts are due by July 30, 2003. Presenters will be selected and notified by August 15, 2003. Presenters receive complimentary registration for the October 30th, 2003 conference.
