MAPS to Host Brazilian Youth Workshop Series
CAMBRIDGE, MA -- September 19, 2002 --
An eight-week Life Skills training program for Brazilian youth
will begin September 30 at the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese
Speakers (MAPS) Somerville office at 92 Union Square. The purpose of
the workshop series is to educate the youth about drug, alcohol, disease
and violence prevention by providing them with information about drugs,
sexual issues, HIV/AIDS and more.
The workshops also will engage the youth in leadership roles in
their community. In addition, youth will participate in field trips and
other extra-curricular activities.
This program is supervised by a MAPS volunteer who has a degree
in psychology. She also provides individual counseling for all youth.
Youth completing the fall sessions will receive certificates from the
program, which is being coordinated by MAPS in conjunction with the
Somerville Community Youth Program. For more information, please
contact Vanessa Santos, youth supervisor, at (617) 825-5897.
