MAPS Plans Reception at Dorchester Office to Showcase Youth Trip to Cape Verde Islands

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- October 4, 2002 -- The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) will hold a reception for community members at its Dorchester office on Thursday, October 10 to highlight results of a trip the nonprofit agency's youth group made to the Cape Verde Islands in July. The reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. at MAPS, One Stoughton St., Upham's Corner.

Community residents are invited to attend the event, which will include a slide show, a presentation by the MAPS youth group and refreshments. To RSVP, please call 617-825-5897 by Oct. 8.

A group of 18 youth from the MAPS Youth Program Gerao Jovem joined several MAPS staff members and Board President Stephen Pereira for the trip, establishing partnerships with government agencies and local health and social service organizations. The purpose of the visit was to showcase MAPS' anti-violence and disease prevention efforts among youth with government officials in Cape Verde, while learning how Cape Verdeans deal with similar issues.

MAPS is a private, nonprofit organization that has provided a variety of health and social services to Cape Verdeans, Brazilians, Portuguese and others in Massachusetts since 1970. The agency has offices in Cambridge, Somerville, Dorchester, Allston and Lowell.
