Social Services

MAPS Division of Social Services provides a broad range of programs designed to:

  • Strengthen individual and family functioning;
  • Assist our most vulnerable community members and protect them from harm;
  • Connect monolingual Portuguese speakers with housing, jobs, education, and other services and assistance they require; and
  • Help Portuguese-speaking newcomers adjust to their new country and become involved politically and civically involved in their communities.

The Social Services Division includes the following programs:

Immigrant Social Services Program
helping individuals and families in areas ranging from job and housing searches to links with government entitlement programs. This program, offered in Cambridge and formerly in Somerville for more than 20 years, has expanded to Allston, Dorchester and Lowell.

Intensive Adolescent and Family-Based Services
providing stabilization and support services for abused and neglected children and their families.

Elder Services
providing nutritious lunches; social and educational activities; access to a variety of important services; health screenings, and other activities at the Cambridge Senior Center.

Citizenship Assistance
providing citizenship classes, naturalization support and other immigration-related assistance.

Educational Services
providing classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Portuguese language instruction, and computer skills courses.

Domestic Violence Prevention
providing advocacy, information, referrals, case management and counseling for Portuguese-speaking women.

Batterer Intervention
providing counseling for perpetrators of domestic violence.
