MAPS collaborated with other key community leaders and institutions to present the fourth in a series of conferences about the Portuguese-speaking community in Ana Nava with Frank BaptistaMassachusetts on June 6, 2009 at UMass/Boston.  Under the direction of Ana Nava, PhD, LICSW, the conference—entitled  homem: achievements and challenges across Portuguese-speaking cultures—succeeded in bringing together an enthusiastic crowd of interested participants.   Collaborating sponsors included the Applied Linguistics Dept. of UMass/Boston, the Boston Portuguese Festival and the CPCU Credit Union.

To complement the work of our 2008 Mulher conference about Portuguese-speaking women, the  conference celebrated the accomplishments and challenges of Portuguese-speaking men as they move forward with their lives and raise the standards of their communities.  It was about immigrants from Brazil, Cape Verde, Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries.  The conference examined the strength of their lineage, their own current aspirations, their actions, their frustrations and their emotions.  In addition, this conference was about providing Portuguese-speaking men, and the professionals who work with them, with ideas, programs and resources to overcome their barriers.Interpersonal violence panel
